SilOnLine interviews Boy George

(English version by Musictakesuhigher)

We met Boy George in Turin on March 14. It was a Friday night and he was spending some time in a quiet hotel, dining and chatting with some mates, just before heading toward the Suono Club, a local venue with a bit of history in its records, where he was invited for a dj set. It was the first time ever Boy George did a dj set in Turin. And a big event for the city.
George welcomed us in a very friendly and open manner, and for about 45 minutes he was happy to let us lead him into a spontaneous and unstructured conversation, which gave us the chance to feel again the thrill of being emotionally close to such a great artist.

Good to see you again in Turin, George. Can you remember your last time here?
Uhm… not really… I can’t remember I’ve ever been here before…

Well, you were here with Jesus Loves You in 1990.
(he tries to remember… or he pretends perhaps…)
Oh yes… with Jesus Loves You; it was ages ago!

Are you feeling nervous for your first dj set in Turin?
No, I feel quite relaxed when I am playing and spinning records indeed.

Your recent tour “Songs that make you dance and cry” is just over. What was it like to tour again?
It was really great. And the atmosphere there and, you know, the feeling with my audience.. All of it did bring about great and groovy emotions.

We were also pleased to see John again on stage with you. Your collaboration means good tracks are in the pipes…
(he stares at us and, interrupting the conversation, burst out ..)
- Moss???
- Erm.. no! Themis!
(we all laugh)

Are you going to add more dates to your tour?
I’d like to go to the States, next winter perhaps..

Will you release your long-awaited new album in the meantime?
Well, I hope so.. maybe next summer, when it’ll be hotter, for the sound too, you know...

What sort of stuff are you working on as of the moment?
Mainly reggae stuff

While we are chatting with George, he signs some of our records, pics and so on, including the covers for the TUOMB album, which were drawn from an artwork created by Svada

Can you remember how you got that?
He stares in Svada’s eyes, then he thinks for a few seconds and says:
Yes, sure, you handed that over to me during the tv show run by Red Ronnie…

It would be good to do something again here, in Italy, and make Boy George again a popular name – as an artist and author, we mean. Have you met Red again recently?
Oh yes, in France recently. He looks always the same really!

You are now in Turin, one of the most beautiful Italian cities, rich in arts and history. Would you like to visit it?
Well, I’d love to, I wish I could stay, but I am leaving tomorrow. And a friend of my mother told me not to come back before having a look a the Holy Shroud…
